What’s in Season? November
What’s in Season this month?
As the weather gets cooler and the days get shorter, it’s time for comforting soups and stews. This month we’ve got the perfect ingredients for that sort of thing…
Squashes! We have all manner of squashes available at Lin’s Veg Shed. The squashes we eat today all come from the Cucurbita genus. Despite the vast array of shapes and sizes, they largely come from only six main species or subspecies of Cucurbita! Mainly the species Cucurbita Pepo.
Another interesting squash fact: courgettes and pumpkins come from the same subspecies of C. Pepo. Madness!
Squashes are wonderful roasted, stewed, blitzed into soups, made into curries…even put into cakes! Their
wonderful sweetness lends itself to sweet as well as savoury dishes.

Also in season is the versatile cauliflower! These beautiful vegetables can do much much more than cauliflower cheese. Have you tried ‘cauliflower steak’? Or just roasting them whole…
There’s also plenty of brassica, including lovely rich cavolo nero; and leeks, celery and beetroot – all perfect in soups on cold wintery days. We’ve even got some lovely salad leaves, as well as the regulars – carrots, potatoes, onions.
What do you do with your Box Scheme veggies at this time of year? We’re always open to new recipes! Find us on Facebook and share yours with us!
