14. Compost. We make our compost from ramial chipped wood, waste wood donated by local arboriculturists, and a very small amount of vegetable waste. Fungi, micro-organisims and insects break down the material over the course of 1 year to make a fine compost.
We then spread this compost over the fields in year 1 or year 2 of the rotation: This helps to maintain and improve carbon levels in the soil, and improve its biological function. We apply a tiny amount, about 5mm twice every 7 years, enough to inoculate the soil with a healthy biome.
We also make our own potting mix: This makes us less reliant on imported material, and gives the
added assurance of being 100% peat-free, vegan, and chemical-free!
