In season organic vegetables and fruit

Squash

We believe that we should all try to eat more within the seasons. Eating produce out of season has severe environmental implications, as such crops often depend on huge amounts of fossil fuel and energy to heat greenhouses, or to provide complex transport and refrigeration systems. The carbon footprint of this is too great to be sustainable. For this reason that we do not buy in imported vegetables to supplement our own supply during the “hungry gap*; When we do have to buy in to supplement our own produce we ensure that it is UK grown and that it is not grown in forced conditions in a greenhouse. So you will not find such things as pepper, tomatoes, lettuce, aubergine, calabrese and a host of other out of season produce in your vegetable bags during the winter.

We try to encourage customers to use their winter vegetables creatively and we have had many favourable comments from people as to how they have been able to make good use of the vegetables they receive each week. We are trying very hard to improve the variety of vegetables grown especially during the hungry gap and are continually experimenting with new varieties and new systems of culture, as well as low energy methods of storage.

A good example of this is squash: we have increased our production of this very versatile vegetable to around 10,000 per year, and have now installed a low energy storage system. This enables us to have squash from September right through to late spring in most years.

* Period of short supply between March and mid June, due to the ending of winter crops and the fact that spring planted crops need time to mature.
