What’s in season – April

April means longer days, brighter sunshine and sometimes it almost feels like summer. April is when the grower begins to feel the Hungry Gap. Not enough produce from storage. Not enough fresh stuff in the tunnels, almost nothing in the fields, to save for the good old leeks and sprouting broccoli (which have just finished, their last harvest went into bags on Easter deliveries).

We have fantastic spinach though, leaf beat and a wooping selection of 14 different salad crops in the mix. Use these raw in salads or cook in stir fries, soups and curries.

Next in turn? Strawberries! Yes, after 20 years, we are back to offering delicious organic strawberries to our customers. You can sign up for our Box Scheme to get your weekly delivery at www.tolhurstorganic.co.uk or stop by our Veg Shed which is right next to the Hardwick main gate.
