Organic on the rise according to latest figures

Data from Kantar Worldpanel indicates that organic food sales are on the increase. Kantar’s figures to June 9, show organic food sales have increased by 3.6% versus the same 12-week period in 2012. The Soil Association’s Small Changes, Big Difference – a campaign to encourage consumers to make small changes to create a big difference for food, farming and the environment – aims to fuel 10% month on month growth during September. Jim Twine, business development director at the Soil Association is upbeat about the future of the market, and is pleased the public is turning to organic for reassurance about where their food comes from. However, he is concerned that demand for UK organically farmed primary produce may outstrip supply.“We know that 37,000 hectares of land is currently in conversion to organic indicating many farmers’ positive outlook for a buoyant future for the market” he said. “But if this growth is a continuing trend we will need more organic farmers in the UK.”
